In a significant stride towards a more sustainable future, Goumbook officially partnered with the Ajman Municipality and Planning Department to undertake a groundbreaking mangrove rehabilitation and afforestation project in Ajman’s Al Zorah Reserve.

The momentous Memorandum of Understanding was sealed on the 30th of August,  in a ceremony attended by esteemed officials from both sides. His Excellency Abdulrahman Muhammad Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Ajman Municipality and Planning Department, signed on behalf of the Municipality, while Tatiana Antonelli Abella, Founder and Managing Director of Goumbook, represented the company.

Highlighting the department’s commitment to enhancing the Emirate’s green spaces, His Excellency Abdulrahman Al Nuaimi emphasized the importance of creating a city known for its nature, beauty, and sustainable development. He underlined the significance of preserving the country’s identity through projects that expand cooperation with leading environmental and sustainability companies.

Tatiana Antonelli Abella expressed her appreciation and conveyed Goumbook’s commitment to biodiversity, nature-based solutions, and climate action: “We are honoured to work with Ajman Municipality to bring this ambitious project to life. Our efforts reflect our commitment to enhancing biodiversity, nature-based solutions and climate action to transform an essential habitat for mangrove trees and unlocking their powerful benefits for climate, biodiversity, people and the economy.’’

The project will provide a unique platform for the development of innovative solutions for land rehabilitation in coastal areas, raising awareness on the importance of mangrove ecosystems while strengthening Ajman’s position as a sustainable tourism destination as well as a research and innovation centre for mangrove conservation. At the same time, the partnership signifies a shared commitment to biodiversity preservation, active engagement of relevant authorities in safeguarding natural heritage, community empowerment, and job creation.

This partnership aims at supporting Goal 13 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals ‘Climate Action’, and also supports national initiatives including the UAE Net Zero by 2050 climate neutrality strategic initiative, which aligns with the UAE’s goal of planting 100 million mangroves by 2030.

Efforts to restore mangroves in the UAE date back to the 1970s, when the Founder of the Nation, the late Sheikh Zayed, launched an extensive afforestation programme to plant mangroves on the country’s beaches. Back in 2020, the “Mangrove Carbon Sequestration Pilot Study” was carried out by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi to assess soil carbon sequestration rates in mangrove forests in the UAE, revealing their ability to store carbon at a rate of 0.5 tons per hectare per year, equivalent to one tonne of carbon for every 5,000 mangrove trees.

In December 2022, Goumbook joined the National Sequestration Program under the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, promoting nature-based solutions and working alongside the Private Sector to reduce the effects and adapt to climate change. Nature-based solutions, including those involving mangroves, have the potential to supply over a third of our climate mitigation needs and build resilience to the effects of climate change.

More information about the project will be shared in the coming weeks/ months. For all entities interested in joining forces, please email us at Ask@goumbook.com

UAE Increases Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Targets https://goumbook.com/uae-increase-economy-wide-ghg-emission-reduction-targets/ Tue, 13 Sep 2022 12:07:52 +0000 https://goumbook.com/?p=28027

The UAE Cabinet, headed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, approved a new version of the UAE’s second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement. The updated NDC responds to the call of the Glasgow Climate Pact, a main outcome of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), for countries to strengthen the ambition of their NDCs by end-2022.

In support of the objectives of the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, the new document outlines the country’s increased climate target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 31 percent compared to the business-as-usual scenario for the year 2030, which is projected to amount to 301 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), assuming a moderate annual economic growth rate based on historical trends. The reduction target translates into an absolute emission avoidance of 93.2 million metric tonnes of CO2e.

The UAE’s updated second NDC features a breakdown of the GHG emission reduction target by sector. The electricity sector is projected to be the highest contributor to the target at 66.4 percent, followed by the industrial sector at 16.6 percent, transport at 9.7 percent, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) at 5.3 percent, and waste at 2.1 percent.

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, said, “The UAE has a remarkable track record of climate efforts locally and globally. Owing to the futuristic vision of its wise leadership, the country raised its climate ambition in its first and second NDCs, submitted in 2015 and 2020 respectively. Today, we mark a new milestone in our voluntary commitment to environmental protection and climate action as we respond to the call of the Glasgow Climate Pact in our enhanced GHG emission reduction target.”

She added, “As the host of COP28, the UAE will continue building on its climate ambition towards 2023 and beyond. With the submission of the updated second NDC, we are demonstrating our commitment to progressively raising our ambition further each year as new solutions and initiatives become available.”

As the UAE prepares to implement its Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, announced in 2021, a long-term strategy is being developed to inform a higher economy-wide emission reduction target and enhanced climate change adaptation and resilience efforts, which will be included in the next NDC.

The Minister noted that meeting the new target mandates a more active participation of all stakeholders, including the private sector, civil society, and youth, in driving climate action.

The updated second NDC emphasises the importance of engaging women, youth, and climate-vulnerable communities as part of an all-inclusive approach to developing policies and programmes that promote climate-smart living as a way of building a more sustainable future.

In its updated second NDC, the UAE has increased its greenhouse gas emission reduction target from 23.5 percent to 31 percent by 2030. To achieve this goal, the country aims to involve five priority sectors – electricity, transport, industry, waste management, and CCUS.

The updated second NDC outlines the UAE’s efforts to boost its adaptive capacity and climate resilience, including the conservation and restoration of coastal ecosystems, such as the Abu Dhabi Blue Carbon Demonstration Project and tree-planting drives. The country will plant 100 million mangrove seedlings by 2030.

To scale up the private sector’s contribution to reaching the enhanced GHG emission reduction target, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) launched the National Dialogue for Climate Ambition (NDCA) as a platform to define and raise sectoral climate ambition and advance all-inclusive participation in the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. NDCA engages stakeholders in UAE priority sectors, including manufacturing, cement, waste, transport, and energy, through hosting a monthly stakeholder assembly dedicated to a different sector every month to explore sectoral requirements, priorities, and future direction related to climate neutrality.

Moreover, MOCCAE rolled out the UAE Climate-Responsible Companies Pledge to increase the involvement of the private sector in the country’s decarbonisation drive. Signatories commit to stepping up their collective efforts to combat climate change by measuring and reporting their GHG emissions in a transparent manner, developing ambitious science-based plans to reduce their carbon footprint, and sharing these plans with the UAE government to help achieve the national net-zero target by 2050.

Ep.47, Think Tank – Managing your ESG reporting https://goumbook.com/ep-47-think-tank-managing-your-esg-reporting/ Tue, 12 Jul 2022 09:26:09 +0000 https://goumbook.com/?p=27850

ESG – a holistic concept that has roots dating back to the 1960s, has evolved over the decades gaining more traction in recent years within the corporate sustainability context.
Referring to the environmental (‘E’), social (‘S’) and governance (‘G’) pillars within the sustainability framework, they are key to addressing the impacts of corporate activities and investments on people and the planet.

With the current lack of unified reporting standards, definition and many frameworks influencing the ESG space, we gathered a network of experts and an all-star panel from different industries, contexts and trajectories to discuss the challenges and highlight opportunities around ESG reporting – from regulation and standardization to quality data collection and the measurement of impact.

This think tank was run by Goumbook in partnership with Emex and hosted by Jumeirah Group in their flagship hotel Burj Al Arab on 3rd of June, 2022.

It included a presentation by Daniel Gribbin – VP of Sustainability and ESG at Emex, and a panel discussion that was moderated by Tatiana Antonelli Abella, featuring Mohamad El Khalil – Director of Prudential Supervision at DFSA, Mariam Alqubaisi – Head of Sustainability and Business Excellence at Etihad, Adrienne Doolan – CEO of Green Touches and Board Member of UN Global Compact Network UAE, and Ashraf Abdelkhalek – Sustainability, Health and Safety Leader for Gulf Countries at Schneider Electric.

Innovation key to unlocking $230bn green investment in Middle East: study https://goumbook.com/innovation-key-to-unlocking-230bn-green-investment-in-middle-east-study/ Sun, 10 Jul 2022 12:03:03 +0000 https://goumbook.com/?p=28111

The transition to a greener future in the Middle East and North Africa would require governments to adopt new policies and tools that will help fast-track the creation of a low-carbon economy, according to a report published by the Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government.

Titled ‘Financing a Green Transition in MENA’, the report outlined two main ways countries in the region can increase green investments. The first one is by enhancing its enabling environment for sustainable investments, and this can be done through policy and governance frameworks that support better finance flow for these types of investments. The report suggested some projects such as green investment banks, creation of regulating bodies for energy efficiency markets, and the development of a green taxonomy.

The other way is to adopt key financial and economic tools that can help raise and deploy capital, manage risks, and mobilize private sector investments. Green bonds or green sukuk are some of these examples as well government-owned corporations financing low-carbon industries.

Jeffery Beyer, managing director of sustainability firm Zest Associates and co-author of the report said: “The MENA region has the opportunity to capitalize its resources, create jobs and tackle climate change but this will require greater investments from the private sector. There are actions governments can take now that are low-cost, relatively easy to implement and would have a big impact in making the Middle East a more attractive environment for green investment.”

The report cited national recommendations that are focused on its unique circumstances where there are current limitations or lack of initiative, while the regional recommendations highlighted the importance of collaboration to deliver stronger impact than if the measures where individually done by each country.

These recommendations offer various ways in which governments can mobilize US$230 billion of annual funds for the region to contribute in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The study, which was funded by HSBC, was presented during Arab Green Summit held in June 2022 in Dubai.
